One week earlier, the Liberty Christian volleyball team suffered its lone conference loss at Eagle Ridge.
On Saturday, on their rival’s home court, the Eagles got revenge.
They swept Eagle Ridge in the Metro Athletic Conference Tournament championship game in straight sets (25-20, 25-16). Liberty Christian had opened the tourney with a two-set win (25-9, 25-14) over Westwood.
Liberty Christian coach Tory Vestal was proud of this team’s effort.
“As a whole, this is the best our team has played,” he said. “We played as one unit, covering each other, encouraging each other and pushing each other till the end. If I had to pick a negative, it would simply be we missed more serves than we should have.”
The Eagles’ tournament title also came a bit shorthanded. They were missing one starter and one other player who is part of their regular rotation. However, Vestal leaned on assistant coach Matt Schnieder and team captains Annabeth Colbert, Kylee Ball and Sarah Brumagin to help with the game plan.
“The funny thing is, what we thought would be an area of concern, being short players, challenging girls to play roles they haven’t all year, actually became the thing that drew them closer,” Vestal remarked. “They played as one unit, moved more as one unit, covered each other as one unit, and overall we won as one unit.”
Four players — Grace Foran, Ball, Colbert and Brumagin — were each named to the all-conference first team.
The Eagles are now ready for this weekend’s Missouri Christian School Athletic Association state tourney. They enter with an 11-3 record overall and 9-1 in conference play.
“The only expectations as coaches we have is that we continue to play as one, regardless of the outcome,” Vestal said.
