A lack of experience in the 400 meters hasn’t hurt Danielle Dyer’s performances this spring.
“She probably ran the 400 three times this year and broke the school record two of those times,” Wright City Coach Fred Ross said after Dyer qualified for the sectional in the event last Saturday at Lutheran North.
Dyer finished fourth in the race, resetting her school record in 1 minute, 2.19 seconds.
She battled a tough field in the 200 as well, finishing sixth in 27.57.
“She probably would have gotten out in the 200 in every other district but ours, which is a shame,” Ross said. “But she got out in the 400, which gives her a chance to compete for one more week.”
Dyer is currently seventh in the Class 3, Sectional 2 rankings, and the top four finishers will qualify for the state meet in Jefferson City.
Teammate Kailyn Gudermuth will be looking for her second straight trip to the state meet in the javelin, where she finished second last week at 118 feet, 5 inches.
The toss was good enough for another school record.
“Kailyn has a good chance, but she has to be consistent,” Ross said. “She threw her first two throws out of bounds and had to come back and battle, then she came out and threw two in the teens, which would probably get her to state.”
The 3,200 relay team of Evelyn Bruno, Maryanna Hale, Peyton Hart and Ashley Lawson qualified with a second place in their race (11:03.64).
“They ran their PR for the season and they’ll have to cut a few more seconds off to get out, but you just never know,” Ross said. “Those girls are running fast and they only have to focus on one race.”
Hart also qualified in the high jump, finishing fourth at 4-8.
“Peyton didn’t jump her highest, and she’ll probably have to jump five feet to get out,” Ross said. “But she’s definitely capable of that.”
Hart cleared five feet last month at North Callaway, and is currently tied for third in the sectional.
The Wildcats return to Lutheran North Saturday for the sectional meet.
“Kailyn, Danielle and Peyton have really good chances to get through,” Ross said. “Danielle and Peyton are right on that bubble, along with the 4X8 team.”
