Where: Wright City High School. When: Friday, Oct. 23.Time: 7 p.m.Coaches: Duchesne — Charlie Elmendorf. Wright City — Jeff Sargent.Records: Duchesne — 1-8. Wright City — 6-3.Last Year’s Meeting: Did not play.Outlook: This year Wright City is in a much more favorable position, hosting a first-round game as the higher No. 2 seed. The Wildcats’ identity has changed significantly, with a different quarterback and head coach, along with new members on the line. But Sargent says the biggest contributor toward tripling the win total from a year ago may have been the Wildcats’ commitment to getting in 50 more reps each day in practice. He says the players’ willingness to buy into his plan has increased confidence throughout the season and allowed them to develop mental toughness.Wright City has seen some tremendous numbers on offense, boasting two of the top receivers in the area along with a 1,000-yard rusher. Senior quarterback Andrew Pfuhl has completed 108 of 198 passes for 1,942 yards for 21 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. His top targets have been seniors Troy Muse and Tyler Brittain. Muse has 893 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns on 45 catches, while Brittain has hauled in 26 receptions for 562 yards and five touchdowns.Running back DeRenzo Blanks has amassed 1,045 yards and 11 touchdowns on 154 carries, while Kyle Tuepker has 483 yards on 65 carries.Tuepker has also set the tone defensively with 119 tackles and seven sacks. Senior Austin Buchheit leads the Wildcats with 174 tackles, three sacks and three fumble recoveries.Duchesne has struggled through a season in which its only victory came in Week 4 against St. Mary’s. Sargent expects the Pioneers to run the ball with a lot of counter plays, with a quarterback he says has shown good decision-making ability. Andrew Clark has completed 88 of 185 passes for 1,158 yards and 14 touchdowns with four interceptions.Bottom Line: Wright City has not won a postseason game since 2010 and this senior class has already seen a tremendous turnaround since last fall. The Wildcats have formed a solid identity through their first nine games and are healthy entering districts, making them a potential threat to keep the season alive at least a few more weeks.—By Derrick Forsythe, Record Staff WriterWright City
