Snow has moved into the northeast region today, so MoDOT crews will be out full force working to clear the roads during this storm."Due to the amount of snow we are expected to receive, roads will most likely be covered tonight into tomorrow, so we discourage any unnecessary travel during this time," said MoDOT Northeast District Engineer Paula Gough. If motorists must be out, they are advised to take it slow when traveling and allow additional time for their travels.Crews will plow the most heavily traveled routes until they are clear. Lower volume routes are plowed to passible and treated at critical areas such as hills, curves and bridges. While crews will be working around the clock, the bitterly cold temperatures make it difficult to plow snow or treat roadways with salt and other snow-melting materials. Even in areas where crews have made progress, it is possible motorists may encounter slick spots where refreeze has occurred or blowing snow has covered an already-plowed roadway. When temperatures dip this low, getting stranded on the side of the road can be very dangerous. Before heading out, equip your vehicle with an emergency kit and let a friend or family member know when and where you're traveling. One of the best ways to prepare for winter travel is to check MoDOT's Traveler Information Map, located at http://www.modot.org/. The map offers real-time views of road conditions for Missouri's interstates and major highways. MoDOT also uses Facebook and Twitter to share information. For smartphone and tablet users, MoDOT's Traveler Information App brings the same information to your mobile devices. The app is available for free at the iPhone App Store and Google Play.Travelers can also pick up the phone and call MoDOT's toll-free customer service center at 888-ASK-MODOT (888-275-6636). Customer service representatives are available to give road conditions updates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.Snow
