The driver of a vehicle that crashed on Interstate 70 Nov. 1, killing a passenger, has been charged with driving while intoxicated, causing the death of another.
Shannon J. Meyer, 44, of De Pere, Wis., reportedly lost control of the Dodge Ram 1500 he was driving while traveling westbound at the 196-mile marker at 8:28 p.m. The vehicle traveled off the right side of the interstate and overturned.
The passenger, Austin R. Wiebe, 37, of WaKeeney, Kan., was pronounced dead at the scene.
Meyer was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Lake St. Louis for treatment of minor injuries, then detained by the Missouri Highway Patrol on suspicion of the DWI charge. He was later released.
The next day, the Warren County Prosecuting Attorney’s office filed felony charges against Meyer, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was taken into custody Nov. 16, and then held at the Warren County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 cash-only bond.
Meyer has a case hearing scheduled for Nov. 29 at the Warren County Circuit Court. A conviction for the Class C felony of DWI causing the death of another could mean a prison sentence of three to 10 years.
