Truesdale police will increase patrols to crack down on impaired driving during the national Drive Sober of Get Pulled Over campaign May 4 -15.The campaign aims to raise awareness about the dangers of driving while impaired by alcohol and other drugs and pull those drivers off the roadways.“Every year about one-third of all motor vehicle traffic deaths involve one or more substance-impaired drivers or motorcycle operators,” said Chief Andrew Huston.“In 2016, 196 people were killed and 652 were seriously injured on Missouri’s roadways in crashes that involved at least one substance-impaired driver.”Or, in Missouri, a substance-impaired driver causes a fatality about every two days. During the campaign Truesdale officers will be visible in the community and aggressive in identifying impaired drivers. They will arrest anyone caught driving impaired. During the same campaign last year 10 people were seriously injured in accidents involving an impaired driver. One was under the legal drinking age.Being under the influence can cause smart, rational people to make costly decisions.“Unfortunately, not only does being under the influence impair your ability to operate a motor vehicle safely, it also impairs your judgment and good sense about whether you can or should drive,” said Huston. He said make the wrong decision is too risky. It could lead to death. It could lead to arrest. Huston said substance-impaired drivers face jail time, loss of a driver’s license, higher insurance rates, legal fees and many more financial, professional and personal losses.Research has shown that high-visibility enforcement reduces substance-impaired driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent.Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over
