By Cindy GladdenRecord Staff WriterAllan Dreyer, a Warrenton native and retired educator, was selected to receive the 2013 Distinguished Retiree Award by the Missouri Retired Teachers Association (MRTA) during the organization’s annual meeting held Sept. 9-10 in Jefferson City.MRTA is comprised of more than 22,000 retired educators. Each year 14 retirees are acknowledged for service in their communities, involvement in the organization, and contributions to education.Dreyer has spent most of his life in Warrenton, with the exception of four years spent in military service. After returning from two years in Germany, he used the G.I. Bill to complete his master’s degree in secondary school administration.“I’m a numbers guys who likes to be with kids,” said Dreyer.Dreyer began his career as a math teacher. He was the assistant principal at Warrenton High School for 15 years, the junior high principal for five years and retired in the spring of 2001.He served as the Warren County assessor from 2003-2005 and was employed by Jonesburg State Bank in the investments and securities department.Since his retirement, Dreyer has been an active member of the chamber of commerce and involved in the Daniel Boone Area Retired Teachers organization.“I feel my big contribution to the community is being involved in the chamber,” said Dreyer. “It’s time for me to give back to the community. I like to stay involved.”Dreyer said one of the projects that gained notice by the MRTA was the Warren County Bookcase Project. In 2012, 75 bookcases were built, filled with books, and presented to local preschool children. The goal of the organization is to reinforce early literacy.“I love Warrenton because it is a small town where you can look your worst at the grocery store and see all your friends,” said Dreyer. “It’s also been very generational for me. I had teachers from one generation, taught another generation and now …see the children of those I taught when I substitute.”Dreyer said the MRTA award is “right up there” of the top highlights in his life.“There are an awful lot of good kids out there,” he said. “There is nothing better than one-on-one with the students.”In addition to his volunteer work, Dreyer still makes himself available to substitute teach students from kindergarten through high school.
