Dreyer Dominates in Wright City Victory

Monday just hadn't gone well for Wright City senior Abby Dreyer. She wasn't looking forward to the varsity basketball game, concerned that her emotions might prevent her from playing well. She was flat out angry. Unfortunately for North County Christian, Dreyer unleashed her wrath on the court. Turns out the game was a perfect escape for her, as she unloaded a career-high 24 points in the Wildcats' 56-29 win. "Before the game I was in a really bad mood, and I just needed to get my anger out," said Dreyer. "It was really refreshing to be out there playing well." Coach Fred Ross says he doesn't recall the team scoring this many points since he has been involved with the program. It was Wright City's largest margin of victory in six seasons, as the Wildcats moved to 3-3 on the season. "Our focus was to take it to the hole tonight and to play good defense," said Ross. "We had a very good offensive output." Jumping out to a 9-0 lead, the Wildcats were never threatened. They led 15-4 after the first quarter. "It reminded me a little bit of the Barat game," said Ross. "We really came out hitting all of our shots. Instead of making the silly turnovers or trying to force stuff, we were just finding the open person." Wright City's size in the paint and pressure on defense disrupted the Raiders' offensive attack. They were able to resort to the occasional three-pointer but still trailed 28-11 at halftime. The ball movement was particularly up to Ross' liking, as seven different Wildcats scored in the second quarter. "We were very unselfish," said Ross. "I bet you we had a lot of assists tonight in our passing, which was really key on pushing the ball up and rotating to look for the cutters." "I couldn't done it without the whole team," said Dreyer. "We made a lot of good passes today and were always looking to the basket and finding the cutters." Ross says his team let up at times in the second half, but he encouraged them not to play to their opponents' level. "We had a couple of silly fouls towards the end and made some nonchalent passes," said Ross. "I called a timeout and told the girls to play as if the game was close and maintain our focus. We wanted to protect our lead." Dreyer was relentless on the boards, bullying her around under the basket and scrambling for loose balls. She pulled down 13 rebounds and had six assists. "She played really well, and she's our go-to," said Ross. "We really went to the hole well. She probably had four of those putbacks off rebounds." Dreyer was well-complimented by her post partners, with senior Abby McNeill scoring 11 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Senior Danielle Greenemay netted eight points. "It reminded me a little bit of the Barat game," said Ross. "We really came out hitting all of our shots. Instead of making the silly turnovers or trying to force stuff, we were just finding the open person." Wright City pushed its lead to 44-20 heading into the final period. Ross was also pleased with the performance of Brittany McPike, who scored six points. "Brittany did a good job," said McPike. "Her strength is rebounding. She made some good decisions and got some valuable varsity minutes." The Wildcats travel to Bowling Green on Friday.
