Two Warrenton men were seriously hurt and had to be airlifted to a St. Louis hospital following a one-car crash in which the vehicle went airborne off the entrance ramp at the Warrenton exit as the driver was attempting to evade police officers last Wednesday. Wright City Police Chief Henry Matthews confirmed that officers had attempted to pull over a 1990 Ford Mustang inside the city limits Wednesday, Sept. 2. He said his department had been notfied about the vehicle driving in excess of 90 mph on the interstate. The occupants of the 1990 Ford Mustang were identified as 23-year-old Brandon L. Reese, the driver, and 37-year-old Anthony D. Gray, a passenger, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report. Both were flown to St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur with serious injuries. Matthews said authorities were still waiting on lab reports before filing formal charges. He anticipates at least a failure to yield charge to be issued by his department. Matthews said the officers suspected the driver was intoxicated. "We're still investigating and waiting on information to get back," Matthews said. "We will file charges once the investigation is done." The car landed in a concrete drainage culvert just west of the commuter parking lot between Interstate 70 and the North Service Road around 10:32 p.m. The patrol reported Gray, the passenger, was wearing a seat belt. Reese, the driver, was not and was ejected, the patrol said. According to the crash report, the Mustang was going westbound on I-70 in the left lane when it crossed over the right lane and continued off the right side of the roadway. As the vehicle went into the grass median, it went airborne over the westbound entrance ramp at the Highway 47 exit. The vehicle went down the embankment and struck several trees. Warrenton Fire Chief Mike Owenby said it took about 15 to 20 minutes for emergency personnel with extrication tools to remove the roof and free Gray. After being notified earlier about a reckless driver, Matthews said officers earlier located the vehicle matching the description inside the city limits, but no occupants could be found. Some time later, authorities heard the vehicle squealing tires and speeding off, according to Matthews.
