Area residents can give blood and honor former Warrenton mayor Jerry Dyer at a community blood drive from 1-6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, at the Elks Lodge 2662, 1101 E. Veterans Memorial Parkway in Warrenton.Dyer resigned as Warrenton’s mayor in October 2014 to focus on his health after begin diagnosed with cancer. The mayor’s health rallied the community to help him and others.Warrenton Police Chief Greg Houdyshell said the city held the first blood drive in his honor as Dyer was being treated and undergoing blood transfusions. Dyer died in January 2015, but the blood drives in his honor continue.“We wanted to remember him for the positive things he did for the community and this is a small thing we could do to see that his legacy lives on,” said Houdyshell.To donate blood, bring a blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification. donors must be at least 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and in generally good health.High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.For more inforamtion or to make an appointment to donate, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org.Blood Drive
