Dollar General Coming to Marthasville

Construction of a Dollar General store in Marthasville could begin as early as October and be open for business by year's end. Dollar General Engineering Representative Mike Doss presented Marthasville aldermen with design plans for the proposed building's location opposite Pecan Street and Highway 47 at the Aug. 17 meeting. City officials received inquiries from Dollar General officials in July about the city's business and building ordinances. Doss said the 91,000-square-foot building will be constructed on 1.23 acres of land and that the construction site was optimal for the engineers. "There's a floodplain on site and the sewer line is in front of the building," Doss said. "We tried to stay away from being on top of the sewer line and we accomplished that. We'll also have a concrete parking lot. "It's not all going to be a typical trench," he added. "There will be stone columns and the building will be on (a solid foundation) that goes 25 feet deep." Aldermen alerted Doss he would need a floodplain construction permit in order to begin work, which he said could begin sometime in October. "All the final documents are supposed to be approved by Sept. 3," he told aldermen. "We're looking for construction to begin about a month or so after that. This is all going to be happening sometime between Sept. 3 and the end of the year." Doss said he was optimistic all construction plans would go smoothly. "Yeah, I think it'll be successful. If it makes it this far, the only thing that can stop it is something unforeseen. It's a done deal." A Dollar General location in the city would boost sales tax revenue, according to city officials. Alderman Jim Struckhoff, however, said he had mixed emotions about the business moving into the city. "I think it's going to be a benefit for the city, but I'm a little concerned about K&R Market being its competition in town," he told The Record. "I don't want to put them out of business." City Clerk Carla Heggemann said she was contacted by Dollar General officials interested to learn about the city's business and building ordinances prior to the July board meeting.
