Security has been tightened at all three elementary schools in the Warren County R-III School District following the report of an attempted child abduction earlier this month. A letter was sent last week to all parents of kindergarten through fifth-grade students attending Daniel Boone, Warrior Ridge and Rebecca Boone schools alerting them to the reported incident. Superintendent Dr. John Long said it was the district's intent to inform parents of students who walk to school or are picked up by bus to be aware of the case being investigated by the Warrenton Police Department. "Safety is our No. 1 concern," Long said. The alleged incident occurred Oct. 3 when a man allegedly tried to kidnap a 3-year-old child at the Warrenton Athletic Complex. Youth soccer games were being held at the time, around 2:30 p.m., according to a press release issued by Chief Greg Houdyshell. The suspect was identified as a white male, believed to be approximately 30 years old, wearing a green hooded sweatshirt. According to the release, the man attempted to lure the child away from the playground near the ball fields. The report did not identify the child being male or female. So far, the investigation has stalled since no new information has been received, Houdyshell said. He added that the public needs to be aware of suspicious people or activities. "I think the community should be alarmed," he said. "We took it as a serious threat." The district's notification wasn't made to alarm parents, but rather alert them to future inquires if they visit during school hours, Long told The Record. "We're making sure staff is more vigilant than normal," he said. "We want them to be aware if somebody is walking around school (unannounced)." Long acknowledged that some parents have changed their routines where students who normally walked are now being picked up and driven to school. When the reported incident was made public, city officials expressed concern that the attempted child abduction was reported on Facebook, a popular social networking Web site, before it was reported to police two days after the incident. Anyone with information relating the case is asked to contact the Warrenton Police Department at 636-456-3535.
