The Warrenton Post 122 Juniors’ skid continued in a 9-5 loss to O’Fallon Post 388 on Sunday.
It’s the third straight loss for the Juniors, and makes two remaining games in league play must-wins.
The loss puts the juniors at 8-9-1 on the year.
Warrenton faces Wentzville on Thursday for its final league game.
Manager Jamey Sherman said he’s confident his team knows there’s still a lot to play for.
“We’re just not living up to our potential right now,” Sherman said. “I think some of it is that it’s a long season. It’s definitely a grind. We’re trying to overcome that and coach these guys up. I think they realize that there is still a lot to fight for. We’ve still got a shot at districts and that was our goal at the start of the season. From there it’s a clean slate.”
A three-run bottom of the first for Post 388 put Warrenton in a hole immediately. But Warrenton fought back in the top of the second inning. Alex Vogt drew a lead-off walk to start things off. Braden Lawson singled to right to put two on for Korey Schneidermeyer, who ripped a double in the gap in left center to close the lead to 3-2.
Warrenton tied the game the very next inning when Dylan O’Neal singled to left and Vogt’s single scored O’Neal.
That’s when Post 388 turned on the offense again, scoring four runs in the bottom half of the third inning.
Warrenton continues to struggle defensively, committing three errors in the game. The Juniors commited two in the third, which lead to runs for Post 388.
Sherman said it’s a matter of getting back to basics.
“We feel if we play our game we can beat them (Wentzville). If we do well in all facets, pitching, defense, and offense – we’ve just got to be ready to go. We need to refocus and get back to one at-bat at a time and just kind of re-group and get out there again.”
The juniors tried to crawl back in it in the bottom of the fourth. Brendan Hazel’s two-run single scored Eli Ecton and Clayton Schowe to close the gap to 7-5.
Runs in the fourth and sixth innings for Post 388 sealed the deal. Warrenton threatened in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded, but Post 388 pitcher Travis Dames got the strikeout to end the game and the threat.
Warrenton out-hit Post 388 with eight hits in the game. Ecton led the way with two hits. Hazel, Schneidermeyer and Alex Vogt had RBIs in the game.
Ecton took the loss on the mound, allowing four hits in 2 1/3 innings. Dalton Owenby finished out the game for Warrenton, allowing three hits and striking out four.
