Deerfield’s winery open in downtown Warrenton

Wine lovers have a new reason to visit Main Street in Warrenton. Deerfield’s on Main officially opened its doors in late September, offering an array of wines, beers and food and bringing a modern style to the historical downtown area.

Owner Bob Truetken said he and his wife designed the winey to be a “destination,” a place for casual gatherings, couples’ outings or special events.

Operating hours are Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The urban interior of the winery is lit in part by lights cut from wine bottles. The walls are decorated with paintings of rustic countryside views. One wall has a running waterfall, while the opposite wall is built with an electric “fireplace.”

Outside, there is a patio on the east side of the building with an outdoor grill and pizza oven. A raised wooden deck at the rear of the building has railings that give a sense of a more enclosed, private outdoor space in an area surrounded by other businesses and residences.

Truetken said he’s received comments about how beautiful the place is, and also that customers love the wines and beers Deerfield’s has to offer.

“For wines, I’ve got reds and whites and fruits, dessert wines, dry to sweet,” Truetken said. “We’ve got 10 different beers on tap. We’ve got everything from a lighter to a stout, and everything in between.”

Truetken explained that he often encounters couples with one person who enjoys wine and one who enjoys beer, so he wanted to offer both. Nine TVs inside the winery can all be set to different channels to suit different interests, as well.

A big selling point for Deerfield’s is that Truetken makes his own wine.

“I make unique wines, so a lot of the wines you can’t buy anywhere else,” Truetken said. “I have about 40 different kinds of wines here.”

Food offerings to go with those drinks include a selection of pizzas, grilled food and paninis.

Deerfield’s currently employs eight part-time staff members. The winery can be reserved as a private event venue, and Truetken said he wants to make it the focal point for larger downtown Warrenton events.

Coming up as part of the Hometown Halloween event Oct. 21, Deerfields will host a soup and chili cook-off, which is open to any participants and will raise money for Turning Point women’s shelter.

The winery was built within the former Stewart’s Drug store on Main Street. Although some building code setbacks during the renovation delayed the winery from opening earlier in the summer, Truetken said staff with the city of Warrenton had bent over backward to help him make it happen.
