Deadline for FEMA funding June 21

Area emergency food and shelter programs have a deadline this week to apply for funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.Applications for FEMA emergency food and shelter funding in seven northeast Missouri counties are due by 10 a.m. June 21.FEMA District 13 has been chosen to receive $35,277 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs.Affected counties are Lewis, Lincoln, Monroe, Pike, Ralls, Shelby and Warren. Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying must contact Diana Hendrix at 573-735-2131 at 314 S. Main in Monroe City for an application.The funding was made available through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security under FEMA’s Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program.The national board consists of representatives from American Red Cross; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; The Jewish Federations of North America, The Salvation Army and United Way Worldwide.A local board will determine how the money is to be distributed. It is responsible for recommending recipients and distribution of any additional funds made available.Under the terms of the grant, local agencies chosen to receive funds must be private, voluntary non-profits or units of government; be eligible to receive federal funds; have an accounting system; practice non-discrimination; have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs; and have a voluntary board.The local board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.
