Wright City senior Sabrina Koetter has found a comfortable balance between being socially adept and having her own quiet time at home with her cat to read and take in knowledge.Coming from a household of four sisters, she has honed her ability to be outgoing and take on leadership roles, including that of student council president and class vice president this year. Recently, Koetter was chosen to participate in an essay contest through the World Food Prize project. She had to choose a topic related to food scarcity and write about a country impacted by that problem, deciding upon Afghanistan.“It’s a farming country, and war has ruined their irrigation systems, making it very hard to raise food there,” explained Koetter. She was among a select group of students chosen to present her essay verbally during the Missouri Youth Institute on Feb. 26 at the University of Missouri. Koetter will find out this summer if she was one of the students chosen to receive an internship to help with the World Food Prize projects overseas. In the meantime, Koetter is busy preparing her future plans, which include pursuing a degree in a field related to political science and possibly running for a municipal or state office someday. In addition to her aforementioned leadership roles, she has been in FBLA for four years, is a member of the Speech and Drama Club and National Honor Society and serves on the school newspaper staff. Koetter also enjoys her role working in customer service at Kohl's.Koetter has attended school at Wright City for most of her life, moving to O’Fallon for a time in between from second grade to middle school. Q: Having attended multiple schools, what is something you appreciate about attending Wright City?“I really like the relationships I’ve been able to form with my teachers is important. It’s easy to get to know them and feel comfortable asking questions versus going to bigger school and being a number.”Q: What would you consider to be your biggest accomplishment?“Earlier this year I received a full ride to Wesleyan University in Connecticut. I literally can’t imagine anything better happening in my life. I was really excited about that.”Q: What are greatest challenges facing high school students today?“I think a big thing is trying to balance work and school. Most of us are expected to work and have money, rather than just rely on our parents sometimes. It seems that work can become more important than school sometimes, and it can be hard to excel in school.”Q: Who has had the greatest influence on your life?“Darcy Cearley, who has been my teacher for four years. Always been more than a teacher, but also like a positive influence and guidance counselor for me.”Q: If you could travel anywhere, where would you choose and why?“I’d probably go somewhere super-duper historical like Jerusalem or Rome, because I think it’d be really cool to see ancient stuff.”Q: If you could have dinner with any three people, who would you choose?“Teddy Roosevelt, FDR and Bernie Sanders.”Favorite Food: “Toast.”Favorite Restaurant: “Panera Bread Company.”Favorite Movie: “Dirty Dancing.”Favorite TV Show: “Family Feud.”Favorite Song: “Landslide by Fleetwood Mac.”Favorite Musician: “Childish Gambino.”Sabrina Koetter
