DARE TO EXCEL: Abby Gens

Posted

Wright City senior Abby Gens has a love for musician Kanye West and Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. Helping others is what she really cherishes most.

“I have been a lot better off than people I have seen,” Gens said. “I feel like I should help people, especially since a lot of bad things happen to good people.

Gens is happy her senior year is here. She is active in Student Council, Earth Club and serves as editor-in-chief of the school newspaper.

She has applied to attend college at the University of Wisconsin and is awaiting to hear back if she has been accepted to the four-year school. She plans to major in journalism and join the Peace Corps.

“I like cold weather,” Gens said. “I hate it when it's hot outside. It is one of the top Peace Corps schools. It has my major and a good English department.”

She feels the Peace Corps will provide an opportunity to get out and see the world.

“I feel like If I don't go out of state for college, I feel like I will never leave Missouri,” Gens said. “I want to do a bunch of things. I don't want to limit myself to one job. I just want to help people.”

What are you looking most forward to this senior year?

“Having fun with my friends. I feel like I am more free this year. I am looking forward to all the senior stuff, like Project Graduation.”

Who has been your biggest influence in your life and why?

“Probably my dad. My dad had a pretty bad childhood and he has always done his best to do really good things for my family. He is a really good guy. I hear so many nice things about him.”

Change one thing about high school, what would it be?

“My first two years I did not really pay attention. I did not have the best priorities. That is what I have changed. Now my priorities are definitely on track.”

Invite three people to dinner, who are they?

“Definitely Kanye (West), Bernie Sanders, I am definitely voting for him; and my English teacher Darcy Cearley.”

If you won $1 million, what would you do with the money?

“I would definitely help people with it. I would save a little bit, like share some with my family. I would definitely donate to charity or something helpful.”
