Several first-time candidates will be sworn in over the next couple of weeks following victories in Tuesday's municipal election. Wright City will welcome a new mayor, while new aldermen, trustees or school board members were elected in Warrenton, Innsbrook, and the Warren County R-III School District. The county also saw a strong voter turnout compared to past municipal elections. According to unofficial results, 2,374, or 11.11 percent, of the county's 21,365 registered voters cast ballots. That was an increase from last April's election when the voter turnout was 8.5 percent. At that time, 1,793 of the county's 21,077 registered voters went to the polls. In what has become a recent trend, Innsbrook had the strongest turnout Tuesday of any precinct in the county with 259, or 55.82 percent, of its 464 registered voters going to the polls. The next three busiest precincts were Gore-Case (27.33 percent), Wright City Ward II (26.09 percent) and Wright City Ward I (21.90 percent). David Heiliger won the Wright City mayoral race, receiving 199 votes compared to 130 for former Alderman Bill Schaffer and 91 for incumbent Mayor Roy White. This is the first time Heiliger has run for public office. Both incumbent Ward 1 and Ward 2 aldermen regained their seats. Jim Schuchmann edged challenger Danny Campbell by a 105-100 vote in Ward 1 to win his third term in a row, while Angie Reynolds was re-elected with 97 votes compared to 66 for Bill Stinson and 49 for James Justice. Heiliger, Schuchmann and Reynolds will serve two-year terms. Warrenton will greet two new aldermen. Dan Dieckmann, who serves on the city's park board, soundly defeated incumbent Jerry Cullom by a 214-89 vote in Ward 1. Cullom had been on the board for six consecutive years. Don Broering won the Ward 3 seat. He had 76 votes, while 57 voters cast ballots for write-in candidates. Most of those were expected to go to incumbent Jim Dreyer. Dreyer had his name removed from the ballot after he was disqualified from the race for not paying his personal property taxes by the filing deadline. In Ward 2, Fred Flake was re-elected to his 10th consecutive term after he defeated challenger Wayne Smith, 72-42. In Innsbrook, incumbent Les Buechele will be joined on the board by Stan Price. Buechele had 179 votes, followed by Price, 163, and John "Mike" Gambill, 135. Buechele and Price will serve two-year terms. The Warren County R-III School Board race was between three candidates for two, three-year terms. Incumbent Jan Sutherland and Scott Costello were both elected. Sutherland and Costello had 818 and 732 votes, respectively, while Cliff Tucker followed with 537. In a five-way battle for two, six-year terms on the Wright City Fire Protection District Board, Keith Thompson and Larry Zuhone won handily. They had 669 and 539 votes, respectively. The three other challengers were Robert Mallery, 261, Robert Kifer, 183, and Roy May, 78. Zuhone is an incumbent, while Thompson previously served for eight months after winning last year's election over Mallery. However, it later was learned the election was held a year early. Thompson wound up resigning and Mallery was reappointed to fill out the remainder of the term. In a two-way race for a four-year term on the Warren County Emergency Management Board, Cindy Buescher amassed 697 votes and won handily over Eugene Jenkins, who had 285 votes. Buescher has been on the 911 board since it was formed in 1994. Warrenton voters approved annexing another 600 feet to the west of the current city limits located at Pendleton Cut-Off Road. The measure passed 394-104. The lone proposition on the ballot also gained approval. Proposition WCHS asked voters in the Wright City R-II School District to pass a $1.4-million no-tax-increase bond issue to fund the purchase of 85 acres for the site of a new high school in the future. The measure passed 617-360 (63.15 percent). It needed a four-sevenths majority, or 57.14 percent, for approval. Several races had candidates who were unopposed. The individuals who were re-elected were Warrenton Mayor Greg Costello, Truesdale Aldermen Rhonda Colombo and Shalene Blackwood, Marthasville Aldermen Jim Struckhoff and Leo Tobben, and Wright City R-II School Board members Austin Jones and Mary Groeper.
