County receives no bids to supply road salt

Record Managing Editor A second attempt to solicit bids for road salt came up empty — again. The Warren County Commission held a bid opening for salt for the 2014-2015 fiscal year Monday, and though three companies responded, no bids were received. The deadline to submit bids was 2 p.m. on July 21. Letters were returned from three companies informing the county that the salt supply was either too low or that they could not provide pricing at this time. The companies were Central Salt, Gunther Salt Company and Cargill. Last year the county purchased salt from the Lange-Stegmann Company, which is based in St. Louis. The county first advertised for salt bids in March, but the lone bid was rejected. Officials noted that they were worried about high salt prices and preferred to wait until this summer to see if the prices went down. Presiding Commissioner Arden Engelage said the county will likely have to go out for bids a third time. “We have calls in to see what the situation is,” Engelage said. Southern District Commissioner Hubie Kluesner said other counties may need to be contacted to find other salt suppliers. Improvement made to intersection The county and MoDOT recently teamed up to make improvements to the Highway 47 and N intersection, located south of Hopewell Hill. The project consisted of widening the intersection by 68 feet to allow eastbound traffic more room to turn south onto Highway 47. The county and MoDOT split the cost of the asphalt and hauling expense, while the county provided the labor. Excess rock from the ongoing Hopewell Hill project also was used. The overall project was estimated to cost $10,000, according to county road supervisor Gary Ruether.
