Warren County prosecutors have charged an area man with felony domestic assault and endangering the welfare of a child after he was arrested Jan. 10 by Wright City police.
Nicholas E. Houston, 28, of Wright City, now faces two class D felony charges. Wright City police allege Houston assaulted a woman in the presence of a 2-year-old child, according to documents submitted to the Warren County Circuit Court.
The alleged assault was reported at the Northridge apartment complex in Wright City around 10 a.m. Jan. 10, according to police. The female victim reported that she had been assaulted by Houston, and that while she was holding the 2-year-old child, Houston allegedly spat on her and threw a tablet at her that missed hitting her or the child.
The woman told police that Houston had threatened that “If you keep ... crying I’ll punch the s*** out of you,” according to investigators.
After the woman set the child on the ground, she alleged Houston threw her to the ground and attacked her, punching her and using his legs and arms to choke her multiple times. The woman told police she couldn’t breath and thought that she would die.
Investigators reported observing red marks from the confrontation on the woman’s neck and leg.
Wright City police said the child remained within arm’s reach during the violent altercation.
Police reportedly detained and spoke with Houston. Officers allege that he admitted to punching the woman multiple times in the legs and choking her, and that he stated he “blacked out” during the altercation.
Houston was taken into custody and is being held at the Warren County Jail. A $10,000 cash bond has been set by the Warren County Circuit Court as a condition for release pre-trial, with an additional requirement that he have no contact with the alleged victim in the case.
A hearing in Houston’s felony case has been set for Feb. 10. The case is being overseen by Associate Circuit Judge Linda Hamlett. Court records do not yet show an attorney for Houston.
