Competition grows for county commission seats

Posted

Another person has tossed their hat in the ring to compete for a seat on the Warren County Commission, and at least one other has inquired about filing, according to the county clerk’s office.

A total of five people are now competing for two seats on the county commission, which are among the highest leadership positions in Warren County.

In the past week, Luke F. Struckhoff of Marthasville registered his name to appear on the ballot for  southern district commissioner.

Struckhoff is the third candidate to join the race for that seat. Tony Gagliano of Warrenton and Wright City School Board member Dave Mikus both declared their candidacy on the opening day of filing Feb. 25.

Current Southern District Commissioner Hubie Kluesner told The Record in November that he will not seek reelection this year, opening the door for a new candidate to take over his seat.

Northern District Commissioner Dan Hampson also confirmed that he isn’t seeking reelection, ending the 12-year stint that he and Kluesner both served on the commission.

Running for the northern commissioner seat are Jerry “Junior” Myers and Matt E. Flake, both of Warrenton, who both registered on the first day of filing.

Warren County Clerk Denise Stotler said at least one other person came to her office in the first week of filing to inquire about running for a seat on the commission.

All of the candidates thus far have registered as Republicans. They will face off in the August primary elections. The winners of the primaries will move on to general elections in November, although they aren’t likely to face additional challengers unless a candidate registers as a Democrat.

Five other Warren County elected offices are open for candidate filing: sheriff, assessor, public administrator, coroner and surveyor.

Last week County Surveyor Robert Lewis completed the assembly of current officials registered to seek reelection. Four of his counterparts all registered on the first day of filing. They are Sheriff Kevin Harrison, Assessor Wendy Nordwald, Public Administrator Melissa Dempsey, and Coroner Mark W. O’Neill.

Candidates who wish to file for any of the elected offices on the ballot this year must register by March 31 at the Warren County Clerk’s Office, 101 Mockingbird Lane, Suite 302, Warrenton. Candidates must pay a filing fee and complete an affidavit.
