First State Community Bank, in partnership with The Warren County Record, is holding its annual Community KickStart contest to reward area nonprofit organizations and raise awareness about their good work.The Warren County Record has introduced many of the nominees and more are listed below.To vote, clients, co-workers, volunteers and friends of these organizations should come to First Community Bank branches in Warrenton or Wright City until Oct. 31 to cast a paper ballot or visit www.Fscb.com/kickstart or www.warrencountyrecord.com.Each person who votes is entered into a drawing to win an iPad Mini.The final four nominees will be announced Nov. 3. The contest winner and iPad winner will be announced Nov. 10. Contestants must be present to win.The top prize winner will be recognized at the bank Nov. 17.The top winner will receive a $2,500 award, 20 volunteer hours from First State Community Bank employees and coverage in the The Record.Here are more of this year’s nominees:God Cares is dedicated to helping veterans who want to help themselves get to a better place in life. The organization helps an average of 2.7 people each week. It works with Missouri Career Centers, Veterans Affairs, Focus Marines and others to provide veterans with temporary shelter, clothing, food, rent, utilities, gas, car repairs and other services that support veterans.The organization takes a holistic approach to assisting the individual. With no paid employees, donations and awards go directly to helping veterans.Relay For Life of Warren County helps raise money and awareness regarding cancer treatment, diagnosis and prevention.Relay for Life money helps with local programs such as Road to Recovery, which offers rides to patients who need them so they don’t miss their medical appointments; and Look Good, Feel Better, which helps patients with wigs and makeup to help them feel “normal” and return their confidence.Relay For Life of Warren County is sponsored by the American Cancer Society and organized by local individuals.Tribute to Veterans Memorial is a future permanent memorial in Warrenton that will honor 71 soldiers from Warren County who died during wartime, a bronze statue honoring the families who lost loved ones, a walk of honor and more.The memorial will become a national monument located on the Purple Heart Trail. The memorial, which will be open to the public, is being financed by donations.Warren County Ambulance District is asking for a donation to help with expenses related to the Explorer program. The Explorer program allows youth to experience life in emergency service and allows many to determine whether they want to pursue it as a career.The cost to run the program comes from volunteer hours performed by the students, fundraisers and the students. Grant funds would help cover the cost of new textbooks for this year’s nine students. Textbooks are $95 each.Concerned Citizens for Animal Control (CCAC) of Warren County is a volunteer group whose mission is to raise money to build and operate a shelter for homeless and abandoned pets of Warren County. The shelter will ensure that these animals are healthy, spayed and neutered before trying to find them a forever home.The group plans to offer spay and neuter programs, dog training, volunteer opportunities and educational programs to schools and the community. CCAC already owns 3 acres of land about four miles west of Warrenton. Next they plan to raise $100,000 by the end of 2018. The KickStart prize would go toward that goal.The Animal Welfare Association helps abandoned animals get adopted. The group maintains an adoption phone line to assist anyone in need, answer pet questions, make referrals to rescue groups, assist owners in finding lost pets and help potential adopters find the perfect pet.Warren County Handicapped Services (WCHS) identified a gap in services for youth and adults who have a developmental disability and provides these children and adults with a safe, healthy, educational and fun recreational experience free of charge.The organization provides training and transportation to adults who participate in the Special Olympics; provides monthly outings to St. Louis attractions and sporting events, and summer camps and leadership programs for youth. Funding from the KickStart contest would go toward expenses related to these events.The Warren County Optimist Club promotes optimism among youth through programs like scholarship funds, oratorical and essay contests, junior optimist clubs, youth appreciation, respect for the law, Internet safety, youth safety, drug prevention and community service projects.Funding from the Community KickStart program would provide college scholarship money for students in areas such as essay contest, the oratorical contest and youth who are doing good deeds in the community.The newly formed Warren County Alcohol and Drug Reduction Support (WARS) Coalition has a mission to reduce and eliminate the rate of adolescent drug use in the community and implement programs that promote healthy and positive choices.WARS is committed to providing youth and families prevention education programs that are associated with substance abuse. WARS is working with area schools to implement some of these programs, but funding is limited. Additional grants would enable WARS to better provide the programs that educate youth and families about substance abuse in the community.FSCB KickStart
