“Play On!” will hit the stage of the Belle Starr Theatre in Warrenton Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29-30, at 7 p.m. and a matinee will be held Sunday, Oct. 1, at 2 p.m. The madcap comedy will benefit Relay for Life of Warren County.
The Belle Starr is located at 112 E. Main St. in Warrenton. Tickets are $10.
“Play On!” is the story of a community theater group trying to pull off a play written by a local new author who keeps changing the script as the play progresses. Brenda Welker, playing Phyllis, the inept playwright, adds more and more confusion as the play progresses.
Welker said Act 1 is a rehearsal of the dreadful show, Act II is the near-disastrous dress rehearsal, and the final act is the actual hilarious performance of the play within a play.
“We are a faith-based group of actors,” said Welker. “We like being part of the community. We have great fun, wonderful fellowship, we look out for each other and encourage each other.”
Ten local actors volunteer their time to bring the production to Warren County. The cast includes Ronda McAleer as Aggie the pessimistic stage manager; Jennifer Olivio as Gerry, the exasperated director; Hannah Stevens as Louise the sound and lighting technician; Linda Lenggenhager as Violet, the not-too-bright ingénue; Jenn Weber as Polly, an insecure diva; Vince Fallert as Henry, the character actor; Joseph Mason as Billy, a spirited young actor; Jacob Daugherty as Saul, an wisecracking actor; Gloria Weber as Smitty, an inexperienced high school actress; and Welker as Phyllis the inept playwright.
“Play On!” is produced by Welker and directed by Jenn Weber. The play was written by Rick Abbot in 1980. Actors range in age from 13 to 74 years old. Val Brunies will provide light and sound for the group.
“One hundred percent of the proceeds will benefit Relay For Life,” said Welker.
For advance tickets, call Welker at 636-359-7327, Carie Biggs at 636-485-2391 or email Biggs at cariebiggs@gmail.com.
