Coke Officials Await Lab Analysis on Sludge Causing Smell

Posted

Coca-Cola representatives told Truesdale officials that they are waiting on a lab analysis for the sludge in its lagoon before moving forward with waste removal.

A presentation by company officials at Wednesday's board of aldermen meeting.

Instability in spring weather has led Coca-Cola using alternative treatments to break down the sludge. A methane byproduct of these alternative treatments has caused a foul stench, which has been met with numerous complaints from local residents and businesses.

Depending on the direction of the wind, the area of the smell varies throughout Truesdale and Warrenton. The smell is also evident on Interstate 70, adjacent to the Coca-Cola plant entrance.

“We're removing the (sludge) to be repurposed as fertilizer so we need to make sure they are safe for those we give them to and that it's not going to harm anything,” said Coca-Cola safety environmental security manager. “It's something to say we're (in compliance) on.”

After Coke receives the lab results for its lagoon's sludge, officials will then apply for a permit through the Department of Natural Resources to have Columbia-based Missouri Bio-Solids remove the waste material.
