The city of Warrenton is starting a new league for baseball and softball players in 2014.“We want to offer a league that meets the requests of our parents and players,” said Dottie Phillips, recreation director. “We can improve on many areas by having some control over the league. In our former league we didn’t have a voice to represent our teams.”The new league, Tri-County Sports Association, will open registration, for children ages 7-14, on Dec. 16 and accept individual players as well as full teams, through Feb. 15. The fee is $75 per child; Warrenton residents receive a $5 discount. For families with multiple children there is a $5 discount for each additional child registered. Registrations are accepted at Warrenton City Hall, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional leagues are available for younger children including tee ball and coach pitch programs.Tri-County Sports Association will consist of teams from Warren, Lincoln and St. Charles counties. The league will offer two levels of play: a recreation division and a competitive division. Each team will play a minimum of 12 games and there will be a postseason tournament.“One of the requests we received was that recreational level teams have the opportunity to participate in a postseason tournament – we are giving them that with the new league. Parents also asked for later start times so they aren’t so rushed after work; our earliest game will start at 6:30 p.m. and we will minimalize the late games on school nights,” said Phillips. Each team registered through the city will receive league shirts, sponsored by a local business; however, coaches bringing in whole teams may opt for the city issued shirts and purchase their own uniforms. The city also provides each team with equipment and practice fields. The city anticipates registration numbers to soar with the announcement of the new league.
