The city of Warrenton recognized "several local heroes" last week for their courageous act in stopping a June robbery at Kroger. Mayor Greg Costello and Police Chief Greg Houdyshell presented proclamations to Derrick and Michael Moreau and Zane Hardy, three of the four who tackled two juveniles attempting to rob the grocery store. The presentation was made at the Aug. 2 board of aldermen meeting. A fourth person involved in the incident, Jeremy Spillers, was unable to attend last week's board meeting. "I want to thank all three of you for your service to our community," Costello said. On June 3, the Moreaus had stopped at Kroger to pick up a few items from the store. Spillers and Hardy were both working at the store. Derrick Moreau and his son were standing near the checkout line waiting for their turn to pay when two juveniles - identified as 16-year-old and 15-year-old males - began yelling and screaming obscenities at the store clerk. They then demanded money from the cash register. After sizing up the situation, Derrick Moreau charged one of the juvenile suspects and tackled him to the ground. The impact caught the second suspect by surprise and made him lose his balance. That allowed Michael Moreau and Hardy and Spillers to jump the other suspect and subdue him. Minutes later police arrived and took the juveniles into custody. A couple of weeks later, additional charges were filed against the juveniles after authorities were able to link them to multiple burglaries in the city. Houdyshell complimented them for their actions "I appreciate everything you guys did," he said. "It made a huge difference. In the end, it helped us also to solve some other cases that were outstanding, too. It was a lot bigger than just that event." Upon receiving the award, Derrick Moreau said "We're glad we could make a difference here."
