The city of Warrenton has released engineer renderings of landscaping and aesthetics for a planned $15.4 million Interstate 70 interchange. The landscape images include arranged flowers and trees in the center of two roundabouts at the north and south sides of an interchange overpass. The images also show flags above two landscaped retaining walls bearing the words “City of Warrenton,” visible from both directions of travel on the interstate.Warrenton’s Board of Aldermen committed almost $53,000 in January to go toward making its interchange plans more visually appealing. Funding for landscaping and aesthetic work became available when officials determined other elements of the project would cost less than their initial estimate. The city is looking for low-maintenance landscaping and visual improvements so the overpass appears as “not just a plain concrete bridge,” Director of Operations Terri Thorn previously stated.Streetlights and a pedestrian sidewalk will be built into the overpass. Future developers in the area around the bridge will be required to extend the lighting and sidewalk in front of their properties to create an attractive western entrance into Warrenton, Thorn said. The new interchange, including I-70 exit ramps, overpass bridge, roundabouts and a reconstructed section of Veterans Memorial Parkway, will be about 2 miles west of the Highway 47 interchange. The Missouri Department of Transportation will oversee construction of the interchange, funded by two half-cent sales taxes approved by local voters in 2016.Construction is planned to begin in late 2017, with the affected roads opening in fall 2018.
