City "Paid for It"

Some Warrenton officials are irked over a "You Paid For It" television segment by Fox 2's KTVI reporter Elliot Davis. The piece, which focused on two land purchases by the city of Warrenton which a recent state audit questioned, aired last week.City officials are chagrined because Davis omitted the fact that the state audit gave the city an overall "good" rating and other important facts concerning the two land deals. We are surprised that the city officials agreed to be interviewed by Davis for the story in the first place. His reputation for "ambush" journalism are well known. Seems that the city "paid for it" by cooperating with Davis. Some may construe this as a defense of the two land deals. It shouldn't. The state was correct in flagging them and the city's role in acquiring them in the audit. But there were other factors in play with both deals that provide background and context to the transaction that, in the interest of fairness, should have been mentioned in Davis' report.Perhaps they weren't mentioned because the story wouldn't have been as sensational if all of the facts and background were covered. It is, after all, television.Davis does a disservice to the public and to the profession of journalism when he omits facts or glosses over key details in his stories. If he is going to call himself a journalist he should act like one and be objective in his reporting. The only way to combat this kins of shoddy journalism is not to watch it or agree to do interviews with Davis.
