Church, AGAPE host back-to-school giveaway

For the third year, AGAPE and Faith Christian Family Church (FCFC) in Warrenton teamed up with community volunteers last weekend to get children ready for school. The Back to School Bash, hosted at the church this past Saturday, was an event for AGAPE clients and church members in need to receive free school supplies, hair cuts and eye exams.Backpacks, folders, notebooks, pencils and more were laid out across a room of tables, with piles of boxes stacked behind them to replenish the supplies.Families proceeded in a line, taking time to pick the items they liked and receiving enough for each student.“It’s a blessing on them, to be able to pick whatever they want,” said AGAPE Finance Director Randa Taylor, who volunteered at the event. In addition to supplies purchased by both organizations, a school supply drive at the Walmart stores in Warrenton and Wentzville garnered more than 12,000 items, Taylor said.FCFC and AGAPE had run independent school supply drives for years, but started partnering together in 2015, she said.“Each year, it gets bigger and better,” Taylor said. “We thought 500 was a lot three years ago . . . Now we’re up to almost 800.”In that time, participation from FCFC and AGAPE have both increased, she said. AGAPE in general has seen a jump in requests for support in the last several years, especially from the working poor.“They all work, and they have jobs, it’s just not enough when it’s minimum wage that they’re making,” Taylor explained.Setting up the event for that many people took a significant volunteer effort. Taylor said 180 people helped to process all of the items the day before the giveaway.Hairdressers and medical professionals volunteered their time Saturday to help get kids ready for school. All day long, children were seated on stools in an impromptu hair salon area at the front of the church.Dr. Kevin Biermann of Biermann Eye Health administered eye exams, and Eye Care Charity supplied free glasses.
