Culinary enthusiasts will have an opportunity to show off their skills to the community and be rewarded this Saturday.The annual Chili Cookoff at the Elks Lodge still has openings and contestants are encouraged to sign up.“We have a pretty good turnout and are expecting an exciting day,” said event coordinator Kelly Pruitt. “We still have availability for more people wanting to enter their chili though.”Contestants will need to be at the Elks Lodge by 11 a.m. for an initial meeting. The public is welcome to attend for tasting and judging from noon to 6 p.m. The championship judging will take place at 4 p.m.Trophies will be awarded for the top three chilis as well as the People’s Choice Award.“We’re also incorporating several other events and awards this year,” added Pruitt. “This year’s theme is Mardi Gras and we will give out a best table theme plaque.”There will also be a washer tournament with a cash prize.There is space for 20 in the chili competition. Several spots are open. The entry fee is $40.Contestants are welcome to use any kind of meat or combination of meats cooked with chili peppers, various spices and other ingredients. Beans are also welcomed to go along with the Midwest style of chili.Those who wish to attend and sample the chili are encouraged to make a donation, with proceeds going to the first responders.For more information on the event, contact Pruitt at 636-359-4865.CHILI SUPPER
