Charges filed in child pornography case

Posted

Charges have been filed against a Wright City man stemming from an investigation related to the possession of child pornography that started in 2022.

Detective Andrew Sitton was assigned to the case following a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

In December of 2021 Dropbox Inc. reported the observation of 12 suspected files of child pornography on an account belonging to Kalvin Harlan of Wright City.

Ditton reviewed the files in January 2022 and at least five were confirmed to be child pornography. From there a warrant was obtained and the contents of the Dropbox account were reviewed and found to contain more child pornography.

A search warrant was executed at Harlan’s residence where during an interview he admitted to viewing child pornography when he was a juvenile. Harlan said he had recently used the Google Takeout option on his account, which exports files from a Google Drive account where he had seen some of the files.

Along with the files, a Raspberry Pie and Hewlett Packard laptop was seized from the residence. Through digital forensics, investigators discovered additional files confirmed to be child pornography.

The search also located a username of Kalvin Harlan and an additional 33 images and one video of child pornography. Harlan had also previously been arrested for the violation of a protection order according to casenet records.

A warrant was served on May 23 and Harlan is now in custody and faces two counts of possession of child pornography.
