By Tim SchmidtRecord Managing EditorThough its new complex is months away from being fully operational, CertainTeed is already earning awards for its commitment to the area. The company was recognized Friday at its Jonesburg facility with the Flag of Freedom award. A brief ceremony was held to thank officials for participating in the Show-Me Heroes program, which is designed to encourage businesses to hire military veterans.Jon Barry, director of the Show-Me Heroes program, presented the award.“When any organization takes the Show-Me Heroes pledge, that is great,” he said. “When an organization follows up and follows through, that has an impact on the veterans population. It shows them that for employers, it’s not just words, it does mean something.”The Flag of Freedom award is presented once a participating company hires a veteran. The plaque features an American flag patch from the combat uniform of a member of the Missouri National Guard worn while that person was deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan.Launched in 2010 by Gov. Jay Nixon, the Show-Me Heroes program connects military veterans with job opportunities. Participating companies sign a pledge to ramp up efforts to reach out, recruit and interview veterans for job openings. The program is administered by the Missouri Division of Workforce Development. In addition, the program includes a 50 percent reimbursement of veterans’ wages for Missouri companies during a training period.CertainTeed officials said they are glad to participate.“We are proud of our veterans and the people who serve,” said Mark Hyde, plant manager. “Having the opportunity to hire some of these men and women has been wonderful. They do so much for us and to give back to them and the community is a wonderful thing.”Company officials previously said 100 permanent jobs would be brought to the area. In addition, an estimated 400 ancillary jobs in trucking, welding and maintenance services will also be created.Hyde said the majority of the staff to work at the Jonesburg facility will be hired later in the year as work on the manufacturing facility progresses. The company plans to participate in job fairs in the area. Assistance also is being provided by the Missouri Career Center in Warrenton. In June, CertainTeed officials opened its 150,000-square-foot roofing product warehouse, the first phase of a planned $100 million complex. Construction continues on a 60,000-square-foot manufacturing facility that will produce roofing shingles. It is slated to be finished in January 2016. When complete, the CertainTeed complex will serve as the production and distribution site for roofing shingles in the Midwest. The CertainTeed facility is located east of Jonesburg, south of Interstate 70 near Scudder Ranch Road on the Warren-Montgomery County line.A subsidiary of Saint-Gobain, the world’s largest building products company, CertainTeed is headquartered in Valley Forge, Pa.In addition to the Jonesburg facility, CertainTeed operates 10 asphalt shingle plants, one low-slow commercial roofing facility and three stand-along granule production plants throughout the United States. The company has the world’s largest roofing plant in Oxford, N.C.
