By Cindy GladdenRecord Staff WriterConstruction of CertainTeed’s manufacturing facility remains on schedule to be completed in January.More than 15,000 contractor hours were logged last month, including a lot of piping, electrical work and laying rails for the delivery of raw materials. The facility is located east of Jonesburg, south of Interstate 70 near Scudder Ranch Road on the Warren-Montgomery County line.CertainTeed hosted a “topping out” ceremony July 8, recognizing that the last steal beam was placed by ironworkers.“The last year and a half has been challenging regarding the weather,” said engineering leader Peter Chihias. “We’ve been struggling to get earthwork done for the railroad. We’re moving forward now.”Mark Hyde, manufacturing manager, noted the company is still on track for making new product in January 2016.In June 2014, CertainTeed opened its 150,000-square-foot warehouse, the first phase of a planned $100 million complex. When complete, the CertainTeed facility will serve as the production and distribution site for roofing shingles in the Midwest.CertainTeed will hold two upcoming job fairs — Monday, July 20, and Monday, Aug. 10. The first event will take place at the Warrenton Career Center from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Applicants should complete registration through the center, located at 111 Steinhagen, prior to July 20.“We are looking for people with strong skill sets of reading, writing and math with the desire to learn,” said Hyde. “We’re going to teach them to use our equipment. We’ll actually take them to another facility to train them.”Hyde said CertainTeed plans to add more than 60 employees by the end of the year. The company has already hired 33 staff and maintenance employees. At full capacity, Hyde expects to have employed more than 120 people.“Our goal is to operate 24/7, a two-shift operation of 12 hours,” he said.Jonesburg Mayor Bob Sellenriek said it’s the first time a company has resided both in Warren and Montgomery counties.“Both counties have been extremely good to work with,” said Sellenriek. “This company has been excellent. It’s a real win-win situation.”Chihias has nothing but good things to say about the company he has worked for more than 20 years and the local communities who have welcomed CertainTeed with open arms.“It’s been nothing but love from the community from the beginning,” he said. The work culture at CertainTeed is a healthy one, according to Chihias. He said employees are willing to chip in and help wherever the need is, allowing everyone to focus on the task at hand.“This is going to be a sweet place to work,” he added. “It’s the heartland, American manufacturing — you can’t spin it bad.”Hyde said the company has had a great selection of local contractors working to get them on line. Contractors hail from St. Louis, Chesterfield, Columbia, Kansas City, Wentzville and O’Fallon.CertainTeed is a Pennsylvania-based subsidiary of Saint-Gobain. It also manufactures vinyl siding, trim, fence, railing, decking, insulation, gypsum and ceiling products.
CertainTeed officials said contractors continue to make progress on the company’s new manufacturing facility located east of Jonesburg. Two hiring events will be held July 20 and Aug. 10 through the Warrenton Career Center. Cindy Gladden photo.
