Cemetery walk will be October 7

The cemetery walk hosted by the Wright City Memorial Society has two showings Sunday, Oct. 7.For the evening show, guests should meet at 6 p.m. in the basement at Fellowship Hall at Immanuel United Church of Christ, 141 N. Service Road W., Wright City. Parking is limited at the cemetery. Groups will depart from Fellowship Hall to the cemetery. Everyone is welcome to bring a flashlight and folding chair for their convenience.The afternoon showing will be held indoors at Fellowship Hall starting at 3:30 p.m. The audience will be seated for this showing.This is the third annual Cemetery Walk. Volunteers dressed in costume will portray nine individuals who once made Wright City their home. They include a soldier who perished in a battle on the Philippines during World War II, a longtime educator and a well-known journalist, author and community volunteer.Three of the storytellers are descendants of the people they will portray. Among these are A.J. Girondo who will relate the tragic story of his great-great-uncle, Harry Scheibe, who was killed in action during the Battle of Luzon in 1945.Virginia Wise will share the story of her great-grandmother, Madelaine Litto, who was born before the Civil War and came to Missouri with her family after the war. The hardships of another cemetery resident, Lula Reed, will be told by her granddaughter, Mildred Groeper.Others who will be portrayed include John Case and Elouise Hasekamp. Case was the editor of the Missouri Ruralist for 50 years, book author, and a Boy Scout and 4-H organizer. Hasekamp began her career teaching in a one-room schoolhouse and later became principal of Wright City Elementary School.Admission to either showing is $5 per person. Admission is free for children 12 and under. Guests at both programs are invited to view exhibits set up inside Fellowship Hall and sample a variety of cookies.In case of rain during the evening walk, the outdoor event will be canceled.The cemetery walk is sponsored by the Wright City Cemetery Memorial Society. The Wright City Memorial Society is hosting two Cemetery Tours Sunday, Oct. 7. During the tour, local historians act the part select individuals who are buried at the city's cemetery.
