Registration will soon begin for candidates intending to file for election to county and state offices. The opening day of filing is on Feb. 22, starting at 8 a.m.
Nine positions in the Warren County government will be decided by voters in primary and general elections later this year. The last day for candidates to get their name on the ballot is March 29 at 5 p.m.
County- and state-level elections are separate from the local city, school and emergency district elections, which are coming up in April.
Here are the Warren County elected offices that will be on the ballot for primary elections that take place Aug. 2:
• Presiding Commissioner, the head of the county government’s chief legislative and administrative body. The current officeholder is Joe Gildehaus.
• Prosecuting Attorney, the chief attorney for criminal prosecutions in the county. This position is currently held by Kelly King.
• Collector of Revenue, who heads the county’s tax collection office. Julie Schaumberg presently holds this office.
• Recorder of Deeds, the caretaker of all property deeds and marriage licenses. Currently serving in office is Deborah Engemann.
• County Clerk, aka the Clerk of the Warren County Commission. This office oversees elections in Warren County, retains the records of the county commission, and performs various other administrative duties. Currently in office is Denise Stotler.
• Treasurer, the independent overseer of the county’s various financial accounts. The current treasurer is Jeff Hoelscher.
• Associate Circuit Judge, Division 2. This judgeship is currently held by Richard Scheibe.
• Associate Circuit Judge, Division 3. This judgeship is currently held by Michael Wright.
• Circuit Court Clerk, who oversees the office that manages the court’s records and scheduling. Tim Beard currently holds this office.
Filing for these elected positions will take place in the office of the County Clerk, located on the top floor of the Warren County Administration Building, 101 Mockingbird Lane, Warrenton. For questions, call 636-456-3331.
Each candidate must bring identification and must pay a $100 filing fee.
Candidates are also required to complete a form indicating they owe no taxes and are able to meet bonding requirements if elected. Those forms are already available at the county clerk’s office. Candidates for the treasurer, collector and recorder positions have to provide additional bonding certification.
A separate category of elected office also opens on Feb. 22 for positions in the Missouri state legislature and statewide offices, including representatives to the U.S. Congress. Candidates will register for the August partisan primaries, with the winners proceeding to November general election.
Most notable for Warren County residents, the Missouri House representatives for District 42 and District 63 will be elected this year. Those seats are currently held by Jeff Porter of Montgomery City and Richard West of New Melle.
State Senate District 10 will also be on the ballot (depending on yet-unfinished redistricting). Incumbent Jeanie Riddle of Calloway County is term-limited and will not run again.
The offices of U.S. House District 3 (incumbent Blaine Luetkemeyer) and U.S. Senator (the retiring Roy Blunt), and the Missouri state auditor will all be elected this year as well.
Filing for all of these state-level elections takes place at the Missouri Secretary of State’s Office in Jefferson City. It begins Feb. 22 and ends March 29.
