The filing period for elected county offices starts Tuesday, Feb. 23.County offices up for election this year are Northern District commissioner, Southern District commissioner, sheriff, assessor, public administrator, coroner and surveyor.The deadline to file is 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 29.The primary election will be held Aug. 2, with the general election Nov. 8.A lottery system will be held for candidates who file the first day. Filing will start at 8 a.m. and stop at 4:30 p.m. Candidates will draw a number which will determine the order of names on the ballot for each office. The ballot order will be posted by 9 a.m. the next morning. After the first day, other candidates will appear on the ballot as they appear.Every candidate must bring identification and pay a $50 filing fee, which goes to the county committee of the political party the candidate represents. Candidates must also have a completed and notarized “Candidates’ Affidavit of Tax Payments and Bonding Requirements.” Those affidavits are currently available at the county clerk’s office.Each candidate also will be given a packet regarding the reporting of campaign finances.The filing period also is open for candidates running for township or ward committeeman and committeewoman positions.
