Violet Brunkhorst of the Warrenton FFA was chosen as a national finalist for the National FFA Proficiency Award in Food and Science Technology — Entrepreneurship/Placement.She traveled to Indianapolis for the 89th National FFA Convention and Expo Oct. 19-22 and placed second among four FFA finalists.Brunkhorst is a graduate of Warrenton High School and is currently a student at Truman State University, majoring in mathematics. Her parents are Julie and Kevin Brunkhorst.Brunkhorst said a job at Trilogy Analytical Laboratory in Washington gave her the background to submit her Food Science and Technology Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) to the Missouri FFA Association. On the job, Brunkhorst learned to test for mycotoxins, toxins formed from mold in animal or human food products. She also performed checks on the laboratory equipment, prepared laboratory glassware and produced purification columns for laboratory and customer use.Diana Miederhoff, her agriculture instructor and FFA adviser at Warrenton High School, suggested the project, according to Brunkhorst.“From day one, Violet has been the model FFA member,” she said. “She embraced the three sectors of the agriculture education model — classroom instruction, FFA, and SAE-supervised agriculture experience.”Miederhoff said Brunkhorst is an inspiration to current FFA members at Warrenton High School.“Her honors at the area, state and national level over the past year show proof that the high school supervised agriculture does impact your future,” said Miederhoff.Brunkhorst said her SAE will provide her with “real life mathematical examples” she can apply in her future classrooms as an educator.“My favorite part of FFA were the contests,” she said. “I’m a better public speaker, I’m more competitive and I have improved my skills in certain areas, thanks to FFA.”Since beginning her education at Truman, Brunkhorst decided to major in mathematics education.“Truman is a great school,” she said. “A lot of different opportunities can be made here.”Brunkhorst said Truman has a “real hometown feel.”Each of the four finalists received $500 and a plaque. The award was sponsored by Pilgrims.
