Brosenne caps prep career at state tournament

Nearly every prep athlete sets a goal early in their career to have an opportunity to be a champion, but very few are able to actually get that chance.

Warrenton High School senior golfer Shane Brosenne had that chance this week, competing in the Class 4 state golf tournament at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club in Joplin.

With a goal of finishing in the top-40 in the state, Brosenne dropped just below that, finishing tied for 55th out of 81 competitors after shooting 85 on Monday and 87 on Tuesday.

“I just missed my goal, but was happy to get the experience to go before I go off to college and play,” he said. “It was a pretty cool experience being able to go to state after setting that goal my freshman year.”

Set to play at William Woods University next year, Brosenne made the most of his time in Joplin. “Being able to compete and make it was really good,” he said. “And the course was pretty good to play on.”

Warrenton coach Aaron Jinkerson was happy to see Brosenne get the opportunity to compete at state.

“I just wanted him to play the best he could and realize that goal,” said Jinkerson. “After his four years at Warrenton High School it was a major accomplishment.”

Jinkerson, who said he didn’t necessarily have specific expectations for Brosenne coming in, noted that the numbers were not that far off from normal.

“If you take his nine-hole average of around 40, he did shoot a little higher,” he said. “But this wasn’t a typical tournament. The course was set up differently than what he’s experienced and he played very, very well.”

While this was the first trip to state for Brosenne, it may not have been that way if not for things being cancelled in 2020.

“He would have had a chance last year if not for COVID,” Jinkerson told The Record. “I’ve known Shane since the sixth grade and he is the perfect example of what hard work and determination will allow you to achieve on the golf course. It’s a tough sport and he never let the low points shake him. He allowed those to be his motivation. I was very happy with how he handled the two rounds at state.”

Brosenne credits his coaches for his success.

“I definitely have to thank my coaches for being there for me,” he said. “They taught me everything I know.”
