A national book featuring the not-for-profit North East Community Action Corporation’s regional housing efforts has been released.NECAC serves Warren County and has a branch office in Warrenton.NECAC’s story of homeownership innovations in Missouri and with its partners in Iowa and Illinois through the Tri-State Housing Summit and the Tri-State Development Summit was selected by NeigbhorWorks America for inclusion in “Practical Solutions From America’s Community Development Network.”“This is a real honor for NECAC and showcases the hard work of all of our regional partners in creating more home ownership opportunities,” said NECAC Deputy Director for Housing Developments Carla Potts, who organized the first housing summit in 2005.“Regional partnerships are vital,” she said. “For the last decade, we’ve led the effort for stable families, better neighborhoods and stronger communities through home ownership.”The story is titled “From Flood to Framework: Building Across State Lines.” It was one of about 175 submitted by NeighborWorks members. Categories in addition to affordable homes are cross-sector collaboration, community building, place-based investments, financial stability and nonprofit excellence. The housing events grew out of the Tri-State Development Summit formed after the Flood of 1993. Housing is one of the steering committees that meet and report to the larger group. The Great Flood of 1993, along the Mississippi River, left $15 billion in damages across 30,000 square miles, including a 35-county region known as the tri-state area, comprised of Northeast Missouri, Southeast Iowa and West-Central Illinois. The book disses how NECAC is committed to creating affordable housing opportunities in rural areas of Missouri. When the flood hit NECAC’s service region, as well as neighboring areas in Illinois and Iowa, the non-profit agency was forced to coordinate housing strategies with multiple government agencies across state lines.NECAC’s other achievements and recognitions during the last three years include being awarded a $25,000 grant to establish the first regional Homeownership Center in Northeast Missouri. The facility will be housed at the NECAC Marion County Service Center at 3518 Palmyra Road in Hannibal, and will serve as a one-stop shop that will offer pre-purchase and post-purchase home-buying classes, counseling, budgeting, credit awareness and more.A formal opening is planned in spring 2017.
