Board: Cops can get motel rooms during weather emergencies

By Chris OrletRecord Managing EditorWarrenton officials are drafting a policy so that in the event of extreme weather police officers will not have to sleep on the floor of the police station. That’s what happened Jan. 4 and 5 when a foot of snow blanketed the area.At a recent board meeting Alderman John Cornell asked city staff to come up with such a policy or operating procedure.“My understanding is that during ‘Snowmaggedon’ there was a fear that some officers wouldn’t be able to get home and then get back for their shifts or to court and they actually slept in the squad room or on the floor,” Cornell said.“It’s to our benefit that we make sure that these people have some kind of provisions, whether we have a room on standby at a motel that can put them up,” he said. “We (need to) treat our employees, police, road crews, better than to allow them to sleep on the floor.”Officials said they did not know how many officers slept on the floor during the weekend storm.Director of Operations Terri Thorn said she was unaware that police officers were sleeping on the floor.Mayor Jerry Dyer said he spoke with Public Works Director Guy Gevers and other personnel during the weekend snowstorm about staying at a motel.“They had worked like a 20-hour shift and neither one knew whether he could get home or not,” said Dyer. “Guy was going to sleep downstairs and I said go get a motel room and get some rest and a shower. I’d tell the police department the same thing.”Cornell said the policy should be no different than policies that allow employees who travel out of town for training to be reimbursed by the city for motels and meals.Thorn said that it was probably a good idea to have written policy in the event of such emergencies so that everyone knows what to do in those instances.“We will put something together for the board’s approval,” she said.Board: Cops can get motel rooms during weather emergencies
