Black Hawk Middle School Honor Society gathers mountains of shoes

Record Staff WriterThe National Junior Honor Society at Black Hawk Middle School recently took a step in the right direction for those in need across the world and in their own community. The club hosted a shoe drive in association with the Waterman Shoe Project organization and Agape Ministries in Warrenton. The drive ran from the beginning of November to Dec. 18.Kevin Crossman, the adviser of the honor society, shared the idea to host a shoe drive from previous experience. He then decided to bring the project to Warrenton.“When I was a teaching assistant in Kirkwood, students held a shoe drive there. I could see the benefit it provided to all involved, and I wanted to see that here,” Crossman said.To collect shoes, announcements were made over the intercom directing students to a collection box outside of the main office. When the box would grow full, honor society members would empty the box into a storage room. That room filed up quickly. By the end of the drive, the group had collected an estimated 250 or more pairs of shoes.Half of these shoes will be sent to Waterman Shoe Projects, which take the shoes to countries in need of water. There, members of the organization sell donated shoes to local people and use the proceeds to install systems that provide clean water. They also return in years following installation to perform maintenance on the existing systems. The other half of the shoes will be donated to Agape, where they will be available to community members in need.“This way,” stated honor society member Allyssa Evrard, “we can help those far away and those in our own community.”
