Kiwanis International has a new club in Wright City that’s just getting started.
The group is evaluating how they can raise money and what services and organizations in Wright City should receive their assistance.
The club has signed up for the Strassenbash festival, but is still determining how it will set up a booth. Members want it to be more exciting than handing out information.
Whatever activities they come up with, they will be custom-made for Wright City residents and the benefactors will be Wright City kids.
Kiwanis is a group of clubs in communities everywhere that are linked to an international organization. Its primary function is to serve the needs of children at the community level by the people who know that community best.
Charter night, the ceremonial beginning of the Wright City club, was held June 4. Shawn Brown, the principal of Wright City High School, was named president.
Brown said the group has close to 30 members. He said members are of different ages and different skill sets. He said membership is open to “anyone who has a big heart and a desire to serve.”
Brown said the board is looking at places to help and places where they can raise money.
The group meets at noon on the first and third Wednesdays of each month.
“We have community members come in and talk about what we can do to make their services even better,” Brown said.
Anyone may attend. But to get on the agenda, contact Lydia Kaiser at Strong Tower Ranch at 636-333-0212.
Public schools do not require community service. Some clubs choose to do community service, or a community service project, Brown said. Kiwanis has youth groups that pursue community service.
“We will be starting Key Club at the high school,” Brown said. “They will partner with us.”
Key Club is a student-led organization. Members get a chance to provide service, build character and develop leadership skills.
“It will be the only club dedicated to community service,” Brown said. Unlike other clubs, which have other missions, “You’re in Key Club because you want to serve the community.”
Brown sad joining or contributing to Kiwanis is a way to improve the lives of kids in Wright City.
New members pay a $100 administration fee, which can be paid in increments.
