The Marthasville Board of Aldermen approved a bid for curb and gutter work along Hiawatha Street.By a 2-1 vote, the board approved a contract with Lamke Trenching & Excavating to add 160 feet of curb and gutter along the street. Aldermen Nick Lange and Mike Kloeppel voted in favor of the work with Pam Jensen voting against it.Alderman Dan Grafrath abstained from the vote because he works for Lamke. The city received two bids for the work. Lamke’s bid of $7,070 was the low offer. The other bid, from KJ Unnerstall in Washington, was for $7,335.The city sought bids for other work but ultimately decided to just move forward with the curb and gutter work.Lange and Jensen disagreed on the timing of the project. Because the city is seeking bids for the road to be paved, Lange said the curb and gutter work should be done first.“We want to get that done and out of the way so that when the paving comes in, the curbing is already in,” he said. “That’s the point of having them separate.”Jensen said she preferred to wait.“I think we need to wait until we get the street bids in,” she said. “We can then have a special meeting to look at the budget and see where we are.”Jensen said she didn’t see the need to rush awarding the contract. If work won’t begin until the fall, she said the city could hold off discussions until all bids for all the proposed street work is in.The rest of the board disagreed and decided to move forward with the project by awarding the contract to Lamke.Marthasville
