BHMS students enjoy land, air and sea adventure

Recently, 108 members of the Black Hawk Middle School community had the opportunity to spend two days in Ohio and Kentucky. The trip, from April 8-9, was open to all middle school students and their parents and guardians. On April 8, the group boarded two charter buses bound for Cincinnati, Ohio. The group’s first destination was the Cincinnati Museum Center. At this site, the students had the opportunity to visit the Cincinnati History Museum, which included a look at historical transportation, World War II, and Native American culture as well as the Natural History Museum which featured an interactive ice cave tour, dinosaur skeletons, and many animal exhibits.“One of the coolest parts of the museum was the model of Cincinnati with the moving trains. It helped us see what the city actually looked like,” said Tristan Mitchell when asked about her favorite things in the museum center. While in the museums, students also participated in a 3-D Printer STEM lab. Students were challenged to design either a spinning top or a toy-sized ship to float pennies. The designs created by the students will be mailed to the school for display. The group left the museum eager for their next adventure. It was close by at Newport on the Levee. The students took a quick break from education to enjoy dinner and arcade-style gaming at Game Works. Even the adults got in on the gaming. Several parents held Pac-Man tournaments and a few teachers even challenged students to air hockey games. After dinner and games, the group swept across the levee through sleet to the Newport Aquarium. The aquarium hosted the students from 7 p.m. Friday until 9 a.m. Saturday. The students participated in educational programs, including aquarium tour/highlights, animal encounters, behind-the-scenes tours, a fish feeding, and a trip across the rope bridge spanning the shark tank. The students enjoyed “petting” and learning about sharks, starfish, sea urchins, anemones, snakes, alligators, tortoises and turtles. When asked about her favorite moment on the trip Kassie Ehll said, “The aquarium because I got to pet a sea cucumber.”Chloe Hilligardt-Johnson added that it was “cool to see how the sharks seemed to get along and even protect the other fish in their aquarium. It made them (the sharks) seem less aggressive.”As midnight came to Kentucky, the students settled into their camp zones. The gentlemen on the trip slept near the alligator and seahorse exhibits, and the ladies slept in the shark tunnel and jellyfish room. The morning included a special program on penguins and independent exploration. The group boarded the bus headed north to the National United States Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton after leaving the aquarium. While at the USAF Museum, students participated in an interactive simulator experience and toured aircraft ranging from historic Wright brothers-era designs to modern passenger-style planes. One of the highlights of this visit was a chance to see Bockscar, the historically significant B-29 bomber that dropped Fat Man (the atomic bomb) on Nagasaki. In addition, students saw a number of Cold War aircraft and explored a NASA exhibit on the space race.Hailey Roberts said, “The visit to the Air Force Museum was my favorite because I want to go into the military one day.”Ben Sommer, another student, added, “It was really cool to see the number of different aircraft and aircraft designs. You could see how things have changed over time.”
