For the second straight season, Sophia Benke has etched her name amongst the best girls' basketball players in the GAC North.
The Warrenton junior guard was named first-team all-conference for the second consecutive season by conference coaches.
“I am very grateful to be chosen,” Benke said. “This is my second year receiving this achievement, and it feels good to know that all the work and training I have put in has paid off. I could not have gotten this without my teammates and coaches.”
Benke led the Warriors (11-17) in scoring, averaging 11.0 points per game. She also boasted averages of 2.4 rebounds, 2.1 steals and 1.8 assists per game. Her season-high of 21 points came in a game against Liberty in January.
Joining Benke as a member of the GAC North all-conference squad is senior forward Makayla Witthuas. The forward made the GAC North second team by averaging 8.3 points and 7.3 rebounds.
Warrenton Coach Hannah Logan said that both players earned their respective accolades.
“I think Sophia and Makayla earning conference honors spot shows a true reflection of their hard work, dedication and commitment all season long,” Logan said. “Even in a tough year, they continued to show up, put in the effort, and lead by example. This recognition is well deserved.”
Just like on the girls' team, a pair of boys earned GAC North all-conference accolades for their play.
Senior guard Deadrick Forrest and Brodey Meier were selected to the second team.
According to Head Coach Mark Thomas, Meier averaged 15.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game for the Warriors (9-18) while Forrest amassed averages of 13.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.3 steals per game.
“Brodey and Deadrick were huge for us this season on both sides of the ball, it is an honor to have their efforts and abilities recognized by the other coaches in our conference,” Thomas said. “To get two players voted onto the all-conference list in a year that there was a three-way tie for first in conference, two of the teams won their respective district and went on to play in quarter-final games is very impressive. They deserve the recognition and I am so happy for them.”
In addition to the players who made the teams for their respective play, Warrenton was also recognized with a conference sportsmanship award for each team.
Seniors Savannah Miller and Jay Sanders each earned the conference’s sportsmanship award.
