Record Staff WriterAfter the Marthasville Area Chamber of Commerce agreed to share some of the costs, the Marthasville Board of Aldermen agreed Wednesday evening to hire a new worker to clean city restrooms. The employee is needed after the city received complaints from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources about the bathrooms at the Katy Trail depot. The city will seek a part-time employee to do the cleaning at the depot and other sites in town.Marthasville and the DNR have a lease agreement for the depot. In exchange for not charging rent for the depot, which is on DNR property, the city is required to provide maintenance to the site, including the restrooms. The city and the Chamber alternate who is responsible for the cleaning every other year. This year is the city’s year and the DNR notified the city about unsatisfactory conditions.Marthasville Mayor David Lange said Dennis Kopp, public works manager, is in charge of the cleaning.Kopp said in most cases he cleans the depot restrooms every Saturday and Monday and Wednesday or Thursday if he’s in town.“It ain’t getting done on a regular basis,” he said.Trei Irwin, representing the Chamber, wanted to know why this is an issue this year. He said the contract has been in place since 2009 and it makes it clear that the restrooms need to be maintained up to DNR standards.Alderman Nick Lange said he has no issues with the requirement to clean the restrooms, but he didn’t think there was an issue with the cleanliness.Irwin said the restrooms need to be cleaned Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. He said it wouldn’t take more than an hour to clean them properly. He said the Chamber agreed to share in some of the costs if the city would hire an employee to handle the cleaning. He also said the Chamber is willing to pay up to $60 a week to the city while the depot is open for adequate cleaning.Irwin said the same worker employee continue doing the work next year when the cleaning is the Chamber’s responsibility.Alderman Nick Lange made a motion to hire a part-time city employee at a rate of $12 an hour to do the cleaning. He said an advertisement should be placed in the newspaper and the job posted online.City Clerk Carla Heggemann said that was done months ago. She said she had two interested applicants, but neither wanted to be a contract employee. Heggemann said both wanted to be a city employee so they would have taxes taken out of their pay checks instead of having to file a 1099 tax form for contracted workers. She said she could contact the two interested applicants and see if they are still interested now that it’s not a contracted position.Lange said posting the job would be “fair” and it shouldn’t take long to fill the opening. Lange’s motion did not get a second and it died on the floor.Alderman Pam Jensen then made a motion to contact the two people who already applied. She said a special meeting could be called to hire one of them in order to get the situation rectified as soon as possible.“I think we should get on with it,” she said. The board voted unanimously to hire one of the two prior applicants pending a review.Marthasville
