As the clock dwindled on Thursday, the Wright City boys basketball team found itself in a precarious position.
The Wildcats trailed the visiting Blue Knights Christian Homeschool by nine points entering the fourth quarter and by five with four minutes to play.
That’s when the team came to life, coming from behind to pull out the 53-51 win.
With less than a minute left, Grant Lehmen laid the ball in to give Wright City (2-2) its first lead of the game, and the Wildcats held on from there.
Lehmen led the way with 19 points in the win while Dylan Lenoir added 18.
The win snaps the Wildcats' two-game losing streak against the Blue Knights, who had rolled to decisive victories in each of the previous two seasons.
Wright City makes a quick return to the court as the team visits New Haven (0-5) at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
WARRENTON WRESTLING RACKS UP WINS – Warrenton’s wrestling teams rolled in their respective tri and dual meets on Thursday.
The boys defeated DeSmet (by a 75-6 score) and Lutheran St. Charles (63-12), while the girls also defeated Lutheran St. Charles (42-0).
For the boys, Zayden Teson had a quick night of work, winning over Lutheran by technical fall in 2:33 and DeSmet in 1:54. Max Teson was the other double match winner, defeating his Lutheran St. Charles opponent by an 11-2 major decision and winning by fall over his opponent from DeSmet in 3:24.
On the girls' side, at 125, Alexis Ruff won by fall in 1:49; at 130, Melanie Gurrerro won by fall in 43 seconds and at 140, Ava Jenkins won by fall in 4:22.
WARRENTON BOYS BASKETBALL DROPS TOUGH ONE IN UNION – A comeback effort fell just short for Warrenton on Thursday as the Warriors dropped the 41-40 decision on the road.
After leading 18-14 at halftime, Warrenton fell behind by five points at the end of the third quarter before the game ended in defeat.
Brodey Meier led Warrenton (1-5) with 15 points while Carter Martin added nine.
Cam Servais led Union (3-2) with 11 points while Blake Siess added 10 in the win.
Warrenton will next host Howell North (1-2) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
