Base-running mistakes and a lack of mental toughness have been a source of frustration for Post 122 Junior Legion Coach Ken Dildine this season.Ill-advised decisions on the base paths led to disappointment for the 3-12 juniors, as they dropped a doubleheader to Union on Saturday.Dildine says the 2-1 setback during the second game was as much a product of his team’s decisions as the opponent’s gameplan.“We had an opportunity to score on several occasions, but we had guys making base-running mistakes,” said Dildine. “We wound up losing a great scoring opportunity on a ball hit back to the pitcher because both the kids ran.”Meanwhile, it was a solid showing on the mound by Brandon Purkaple, who struck out two batters and walked two, while giving up five hits and one earned run.“Brandon pitched a phenomenal game for us again,” said Dildine.Warrenton actually held the lead first after Bradley Smith singled to score Austin Dixon in the top of the second.“We started off strong,” said Dildine.Union gained control in the fourth, placing three runners on base and scoring two of them with the aid of a passed ball and defensive miscue.Post 122 had an opportunity to counter in the fifth. Despite getting four batters on base, not a single run would score. One fell victim to a fielders’ choice but another two were caught on the base paths.“The top of my lineup has been hitting the ball really hard,” said Dildine. “Brandon had gone 3-for-3, and he was due up.”He says his team failed to respond to its adversity, surrendering its enthusiasm the rest of the game. He emphasized a lack of mental toughness.“We have to take our scoring chances when we can get them, because they’re few and far between,” said Dildine. “In this league, we can’t get by on making a couple mistakes.”Smith finished with three hits, while Dixon had an RBI.Post 122 will need an exceptionally strong finish if it stands a chance of competing in the postseason.“As a coach, you can only take them so far,” said Dildine. “They have to have the ability to listen.
