A back-to-school giveaway for local children will be a special feature of the August First Friday festival in downtown Wright City on Aug. 6 starting at 5 p.m.
For the cost of a canned or packaged food donation to the Wright City Community Food Pantry, school-age children at the festival will receive a plethora of school supplies donated by area businesses and individuals. When families check in with at least one food donation per child, they will receive wristbands that will allow them to pick up any of the available supplies, explained festival co-organizer Kelly Hill.
Enough supplies for 200 children will be provided, and wristbands for the donations will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis, Hill said. In total, thousands of dollars in school supplies will be given away that evening.
“The bookbags alone are probably $500,” commented Hill. “It’s extremely generous for the businesses to want to give for the kids.
Along with the giveaway, festival organizers have arranged for a plethora of special kid-friendly activities. There will be a performance by the Wright City Dance Team at 6 p.m., followed by a pie auction at 6:15 led by U Bought It auctioneer Matt Johnston. The winner of the auction will get to take one pie home, and put another pie in the face of Wright City Schools Superintendent Chris Berger.
Leading up to 7:30, festival guests will be able to buy tickets for a school principal “kiss the pig” contest – participants will use their tickets to vote for which principal they want to kiss a pig at 7:30.
Also available will be tickets for a 50/50 raffle, with proceeds going to reimburse the cost of hosting this free community festival.
Throughout the evening, a live acoustic band will entertain attendees at the festival.
