Augusta Winery soon will have a new building for barrel storage on site, at 5601 High St. in Augusta. The 10,000-square-foot building is under construction adjacent to the winery’s tasting room, according to owner Tony Kooyumjian. The barrels had been stored off site in a building that was temperature controlled, but not humidity controlled, which is “important for storing oak barrels.”“If the humidity is low, wine evaporates and you have to keep adding wine to the barrels,” Kooyumjian explained. “So it takes more time and you lose wine.”Having the space right next to the bottling line also makes it more convenient for production, he added. Excavation began at the end of March. Kooyumjian said he hopes to have the building finished by the beginning of harvest, which is Aug. 20.“The highlight is that it has a solarium on the top to let in natural light,” said Kooyumjian, noting that during the day, electric lighting will not be needed. In addition to making the building look more architecturally pleasing, the 16-foot opening makes for a more pleasant work environment, he said. The facade will be all stone to keep with the German architecture of Augusta, which was settled by Germans. Jaspers Remodeling and Construction, Marthasville, is completing the work.
